Teams are now forming for Tallapoosa County’s May 10 Relay for Life event at the Charles E. Bailey Sportsplex, said Bridget Thornell at Russell Medical Center’s Cancer Center.
“Our goal is $80, 000 this year,” said Thornell. “We want to try to reach that -exceeding it would be great.”
Relay for Life will be May 10, and teams can register right up until the day of the event; now, however, is the optimal time to get involved.
“We would like for teams to go ahead and get started, so they can attend the team captain meetings. We give valuable information at every meeting,” Thornell said. A team captain meeting is scheduled for March 21, and 18 teams already have signed up.
There is no minimum number required to create a team, which can be done by visiting www.relayforlife.org/tallapoosa. Thornell said 15 is the maximum number of people who can be on one team.
But even people who don’t have a team can get involved with Relay-those who would like to join a team can attend a team captain meeting.
“People join up with other people they don’t even know all the time” Thornell said.
Relay involvement is also possible by joining the committee or volunteering to help on the day of the event. This year’s Relay for Life Theme is ‘Freedom from Cancer, A United State of Mind,’ with teams being encouraged to decorate their tents at Relay based around a certain state, like a luau theme for Hawaii.
